Bret McKeand, 60, began his career with Independent Newsmedia Inc. USA in 1983 and over the years has served in numerous roles before retiring in 2018 as president of the company’s Arizona operations. He remains with the company in a part-time position as Senior Executive Editor.
He began his career with the Independent as a reporter for the Sun City Independent, and was named editor in 1985 and publisher in 1986. As publisher, he oversaw the expansion of the West Valley operations from one weekly newspaper to at one time, five weekly community publications. He was named Arizona vice president in 2004 and president in 2010, where he was responsible for overseeing the company’s publishing and printing operations.
He is a former president of the boards of directors for the Arizona Newspapers Association,Arizona Newspapers Association Foundation, Northwest Valley Chamber of Commerce (now the Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce), Peoria Diamond Club, Sun City Community Fund, Peoria North Rotary Club and Sun Cities Area Historical Society. He presently serves on the boards of directors for the Sun Cities Area Historical Society, Peoria North Rotary Foundation and Sports Fund of Arizona.
In 2013 he was inducted into the Order of the Silver Key Society by the Valley of the Sun Society of Professional Journalists, an award recognizing “25-plus years of notable journalism in Arizona.”
A Rotarian for nearly 15 years, he has been elected to serve as Rotary Arizona District 5495 Governor in 2021-22.
